Manor Restoration: Moving Ahead
With the restored windows and shutters in place, we
are moving ahead to work on the West Porch and the interior
restoration of five historic rooms. If you can
help with a donation, we'd be most grateful.
Call for Volunteers
M-BELT relies a great deal on our volunteers. We have numerous
opportunities for those interested in landscape work, planning,
publicity, special events, outreach, tour guides, etc.
How to Help
After four years of advocacy, 50 acres of the Brooks Estate and the two historic buildings were permanently protected with a Conservation and Preservation Restriction in late 1998.
Work is proceeding on two main fronts: the open space and landscape, and the historic buildings.
First, the Manor roof, systems, and windows have been substantially repaired or restored. Further funds are needed to finish the Manor exterior (West Porch, trim, etc.) and the restoration of historic rooms.
The Manor and Carriage House settings are also a focus. A Historic Core Landscape Plan has been completed and will guide the restoration of the area surrounding the Manor and Carriage House.
Second, a Landscape Management Plan for the open space, habitat and historic landscape elements of the Brooks Estate has been completed, and cost estimates for its realization are underway.
Finally, work has begun on the restoration and adaptive re-use of the Carriage House (Restoration Update). This includes first-ever drawings, cost estimates, and a business plan for the re-use of the building (and the Manor).
All these elements will be integrated into a Master Plan for the Brooks Estate designed to protect the conservation values of the land and environment and restore the historic buildings as community assets.
Our success will depend on the energies, resources and goodwill of all those who have come to value the Brooks Estate as a miraculous gift from our past, a daily treasure for the present, and a precious legacy for the future.
